Globalization and robotics (globotics) are jointly transforming the world economy at an explosive pace. While much of the literature has focused on rich nations, the changes are quite likely to affect developing nations in important ways. The premise of the paper – which should be regarded as a thought-piece – is based on an extreme thought experiment. What does development look like when digital technology has rendered manufacturing jobless and many services freely traded? Our conclusion is that the service-led development path may become the norm rather than the exception; think India, not China. Since success in the service sector is based on quite different factors than success in manufacturing, development strategies and mindsets may have to change. This is an optimistic conclusion since it suggests that developing nations can directly export the source of their comparative advantage – low-cost labour – without having first to make goods with that labour.

Summary
Learning objectives
How do I:
increase my understanding of the elements of critical thinking?
counteract the barriers that might limit my critical thinking?
improve my skills in decision-making?
identify common decision-making errors?
make better use of evidence in healthcare decision-making?
Introduction
It is important for managers and leaders to be able to critically analyse their own thinking and decision-making processes. Aspects of thinking and acting that managers and leaders should understand include their personal preferences, prejudices and cultural beliefs, and their personal motivations and desires. It is also important for them to understand the way these shape the biases they take to decision-making. To achieve success, leaders and managers require the ability to analyse, synthesise and establish their thoughts in a logical argument to reach a convincing conclusion.
Critical thinking
When faced with challenging management situations, the capacity to ask the right questions in order to clarify the situation helps managers to formulate appropriate responses. Critical thinking is a rational, systematic process that involves the assessment of statements and arguments, and the formulation of questions.
A statement claims that something is, or is not, the case and is not necessarily an argument. For example, three different statements that by themselves do not form an argument are: ‘Smoking tobacco is bad for your health’, ‘Clinicians without management education make poor managers’ and ‘Healthcare is too expensive’. Critical thinking helps us decide if there is suffi cient information to accept these statements.

The aim of this review paper is to consider how the principles of clinical audit could be applied to the development of an audit of nutritional care in hospitals and care homes, based on criteria derived from the Essence of Care: Food and Drink. A literature review identified fifteen key papers that included guidance or standards for nutritional care in hospitals or care homes. These were used to supplement the ten factors suggested by the Essence of Care to develop a set of potential audit criteria covering all aspects of the nutritional care pathway including the identification of risk of malnutrition, implementation of nutritional care plans, referral to healthcare professionals for further nutritional assessment and nutritional support strategies. A series of audit tools have been developed, including an organisational level audit tool, a staff questionnaire, a patients' and residents' records audit tool and a patients' and residents' experiences questionnaire. Further issues to consider in designing a national nutritional audit include the potential role of direct observation of care, the use of trained auditors and the scope for including the results of pre-existing local audits. In conclusion, a national audit would need to encompass a very large number of health and care organisations of widely varying sizes and types and a diverse range of people.

Background
Post-conflict mental health studies in low-income countries have lacked pre-conflict data to evaluate changes in psychiatric morbidity resulting from political violence.
AimsThis prospective study compares mental health before and after exposure to direct political violence during the People's War in Nepal.
MethodAn adult cohort completed the Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory in 2000 prior to conflict violence in their community and in 2007 after the war.
ResultsOf the original 316 participants, 298 (94%) participated in the post-conflict assessment. Depression increased from 30.9 to 40.6%. Anxiety increased from 26.2 to 47.7%. Post-conflict post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was 14.1%. Controlling for ageing, the depression increase was not significant. The anxiety increase showed a dose–response association with conflict exposure when controlling for ageing and daily stressors. No demographic group displayed unique vulnerability or resilience to the effects of conflict exposure.
ConclusionsConflict exposure should be considered in the context of other types of psychiatric risk factors. Conflict exposure predicted increases in anxiety whereas socioeconomic factors and non-conflict stressful life events were the major predictors of depression. Research and interventions in postconflict settings therefore should consider differential trajectories for depression v. anxiety and the importance of addressing chronic social problems ranging from poverty to gender and ethnic/caste discrimination.

Summary
KEY MESSAGES: THREE FACTS AND AN IMPLICATION
∙ Fact 1: The world trade system is marked by a motley assortment of discriminatory trade agreements known as the ‘Spaghetti Bowl’.
∙ Fact 2: Regionalism is here to stay. Trade agreements will continue to proliferate even after the current trade round meanders to a conclusion.
∙ Fact 3: This tangle of trade deals is a sub-optimal way to organise world trade. The discrimination inherent in regionalism is economically inefficient and the costs rise as manufacturing becomes ever more internationalised and supply chains grow across national borders.
Regionalism is also unfair. While the spaghetti bowl is a problem for firms in big nations, it is much more of a problem for firms in poor nations. Rich nations have the resources and negotiating leverage to navigate the tangle's worst effects. The governments of small and poor nations do not. The spaghetti bowl falls much harder on the heads of the world's small and poor nations.
Implication: As the spaghetti bowl's inefficiencies are increasingly magnified, the world must find a solution. Since regionalism is here to stay, the solution must work with existing regional arrangements, not against it. The solution must be to multilateralise regionalism.
Introduction
The World Trade Organization (WTO)-centric world trade system is principled and rules-based, yet flexible enough to embrace the vast range of realities facing nations across the planet. The key principle – Article I of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) – is non-discrimination.

Summary
Introduction
In the late 1940s and 1950s, the profession's best and brightest minds were focused on regionalism: Jacob Viner, James Meade, Richard Lipsey, Harry Johnson and Max Cordon, inter alia. The reason was simple. Europe's post-war architecture was one of the world's greatest problems and a free trade area was to be part of it, economists were muddled over the issue. The thinking of the 1950s straightened out the economics and established the intellectual paradigm that dominated the regionalism literature right up to 1991. The paradigm was framed around the Vinerian question: ‘Would a nation gain from joining various preferential trade configurations?’, This literature – what could be called Small-Think Regionalism – ignored systemic implications since the only large preferential arrangement – the EEC – was viewed as sui generis.
All this changed in the late 1980s when large-scale regionalism was reignited in North America. Regionalism seemed to sweep the world trading system like wildfire while the multilateral GATT talks proceed at a glacial pace. Then GATT negotiations slipped into a four-year coma in December 1990 with the acrimonious failure of the summit that was supposed to have wrapped up the Uruguay Round. Regionalism seemed to threaten the multilateral trade system. Once again, regionalism attracted attention from the profession's leading lights.
In 1991, Paul Krugman, Larry Summers and Jagdish Bhagwati laid out lines of analysis – what might be called Big-Think Regionalism – that continue to guide the profession's thinking on regionalism even today.

Regional trade agreements (RTAs) have proliferated around the world in the past two decades, and now nearly all members of the WTO are party to at least one. Besides tariffs and rules of origin regulating trade in goods, many RTAs now include provisions on services, investments, technical barriers to trade and competition rules, as well as a host of issues not directly related to trade. The geographic reach of RTAs is expanding, with transcontinental agreements spreading forcefully alongside intra-regional agreements. 'Multilateralizing Regionalism' was the title of a major conference held from 10–12 September 2007 at the WTO in Geneva. Brought together in this publication, the conference papers achieve two things. First, they marshall detailed, new empirical work on the nature of the 'Spaghetti Bowl' and the problems it poses for the multilateral trade system. Second, they contribute fresh and creative thinking on how to 'tame the tangle' of regional trade agreements.
